Loltun Caverns

Loltun means, “Stone flower” in the Mayan language, and it’s the name of singular caverns located at the south of Yucatan State in which there have been found evidence of human establishments dating 400 to 700 years on. Mayans used this to get clay to make their instruments, as a religious center and as a refuge.

Another very interesting attractive are the wall paintings: In a wall we can see hands in negative, in the other are located more complex paintings of human faces and animals.

There is a huge dome in the gallery known as the Cathedral. During the trip we can see colorful sets of light and shadows, caused by the sunrays passing through many cavities.

Since the beginning of the trip, visitors can admire stone formations that, due to their unusual shapes, have been called with peculiar names like The Cathedral, The head, the big canyon, and the cob, Black Hands etc.

Among this ones calls our attention a series of columns that being hit make sounds of different tones. The caverns also keep a human head. Which was exhibited at the Anthropology Museum from 1959 to 1960, and went back to the place in 1989.

Visiting this caverns is a unique experience. The trip covers more than 700 meters of stone formations.
